About Our School
Who can train?
Anyone from ages 5 to 75 that is willing to put forth the effort. The mission of Plano Self-Defense Studio is to “Build a World of Confidence”. This is donethrough the self-defense and health arts. There are many fears in today’s society. Some are unnecessary, while others must not be underestimated. Those that are unnecessary, such as peer pressure or ordinary bullying, can be controlled with proper training. Other fears, such as armed assault or multiple attackers, can be dealt with by understanding these dangers and learning how to respond correctly under pressure.
In the process of gaining the confidence that comes from knowing how to protect one’s self, students develop discipline, self-esteem and respect for others. These are important elements of good character, and extend far beyond the training hall, especially for children. They help to improve grades, build responsibility, and strengthen relationships. This is supported by a Carleton University study reported in Psychology Today (Jan. 1985), which found that children in martial arts have a lower level of anxiety, and an increased sense of responsibility and self-esteem.
“This sounds GREAT! But, I have to get in shape first. I’ll call you back.” We begin every class with the Health Arts that are designed to take you on the slow but, steady road of rehabilitating your body. We start with a Joint Integrity and Mobility program designed to return your body to the Flexibility and Pain-LESS state you were born to have. Can we arrive at a painless state? I don’t know! But I do know that we can have LESS Pain
What we are NOT!
We are NOT a quick fix, in 6 weeks you to can Kick-Butt solution! We do NOT teach kickboxing (Aerobic kickboxing is what you should be asking for. If you’re not going to fight it’s not kickboxing!) We do NOT teach UFC/Mixed Martial Arts (Although Kuntaw is a mixed martial art) and we do NOT teach Extreme Martial Arts! The Truth about Self-Defense Training
The truth is you have been lied to! You have been lied to by all the television and movies, by all the media that you have been fed. Like so much pabulum, you have drunk from the baby bottle of self-defense/martial arts.
There is no “quick fix” training that works LONG term. The idea of going to a seminar (a day or two of training) and then expecting to be able to defend yourself or your loved ones in some distant future incident is ludicrous. This thinking could cost you your life or worse, the life of a loved one (Denial KILLS twice!).
The truth of the matter is that self-defense training requires continued training. This must be done to engrain it into muscle memory. You have to be able to act in a situation not trying to remember something that was thought 6 months or a year ago without any reinforcement. By then it’s too late!
Human beings learn and retain mental and physical skills through repetition. Let’s say that before the age of 16 you rode a bicycle everywhere. You were quite good at it. At 16 you got your drivers license and slowly stopped riding your bicycle for the convenience of the four-wheeled automobile. Go forward ten years and now you have to ride a bicycle. Sure you can do it, but as well as when you stopped? Of course not! Will you fall? Will you wobble? But let’s say that your life is dependent on riding that bicycle just like before you were 16. Or how about the algebra you learned in high school, would you stake your life on being able to do it twenty years later? Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? So does taking a self-defense course without ever intending on continued education? I am constantly amazed by the number of people that want to take a 2 or 3-hour course and be able to defend themselves at the end of it for the rest of their life. STOP LIVING IN A HOLLYWOOD FANTASY!
Let’s have a look at one more thing. Let’s look at a group of people who put their life on the line everyday, our military and law enforcement. These trained professionals are given an intensive training course during boot camp (except the Navy, that’s why there are Marines) or the Police Academy. They are required to qualify by the end of this intensive training or they are not allowed to go forward with their training or career. Then they are required to re-qualify within the year, usually within six months. The reason for the 6 months re-qualification is that after that time period your skills diminish through lack of training and use. Faulty memory and bad habits creep in that could spell the end for you or your team. The SEAL teams have a motto that says it all; “The more you sweat in training the less you bleed in combat!”
What does this have to do with you? The common civilian? You need to go into a self-defense course with your eyes wide open. You need to understand what is really required of you for your success. What kinds of schools are out there for you? Do you need a Self-Defense Course or Martial Arts that’s self-defense oriented? And what is the difference? Go to “How to choose a Self-Defense School” to find out!
